Educators Unite Behind Diversity
James Banks, the Russell F. Stark University professor, led a symposium at the University of Redlands on Tuesday called, "A One Day Institute on Educational Leadership for Social Justice." He suggested that students who learn together in groups are more likely to be successful than students who isolate themselves and that encouraging diversity can be found in several ways on school grounds. Banks states, in the article, that "our nation is becoming increasingly diverse in terms of religion, in terms of race and ethnicity, in terms of awareness of sexual orientation." It's important to consider how our children our interpreting America and our educators have the power to teach our children about multiculturalism beyond classroom projects or holidays. If America is really going to live up to its own boasting as a truly diverse place, then it's way overdue time that our children learn much more than American history and American social studies. The time is now!
