Diversity Video Strikes Up Controversy


The "We Are Family" diversity DVD has been sweeping up a wave of controversy. Two school district committees are rejecting the movie based on the claim that it would be "encouraging children to view everyone as family would make children vulnerable to strangers who meant them harm." But over 2 hundred supporters showed up for a campaign to support the movie for its inclusion of diversity. If educators and parents make it a point to differentiate between respecting and accepting all peoples versus staying away from strangers, then kids will not think it is fine to embrace strangers. Theses are separate ideas and areas of education that are both vital to emphasize in any curriculum. We need to teach children diversity in as many ways as we can and movies are one of the fun ways to get multiculturalism soaked into their young minds. If there are extra precautions to take to do so, then so be it.
