Irate Mothers Demand Fox Television Cancel New Reality TV Show "Who's Your Daddy"
Deb Capone, a single adoptive mom, is leading a nationwide, grassroots effort to shelve Fox TV's plans to air "Who's Your Daddy", a reality TV show in which an adopted woman tries to identify her biological father among eight men - seven of whom are impostors seeking to convince her they are the real thing.
NEW YORK, NY December 16, 2004 — Deb Capone, a single adoptive mom, is leading a nationwide, grassroots effort to shelve Fox TV's plans to air "Who's Your Daddy", a reality TV show in which an adopted woman tries to identify her biological father among eight men - seven of whom are impostors seeking to convince her they are the real thing. She is urging any American who respects families formed through adoption to write and call the producers of the show, Hallock & Healey Entertainment, as well as Fox TV, to express their outrage towards a program she feels is insensitive and demeaning. In the last 24 hours, hundreds of messages have already been sent out as result of her efforts.
Overwhelmed by the outpouring of responses from not only families affected by adoption, but from traditional families, single parents, social workers, and businesspeople, Ms. Capone warns, "We will not rest until Fox announces its plans to shelve the show."
Through her adoption advocacy organization As Simple as That®, Ms. Capone has set up tools for upset Americans to express their rage. Irate mothers and any concerned citizens who agree that the show marginalizes, undermines, and ridicules all families formed by adoption can visit the website, www.simpleasthat.com to find form letters and contact details for Fox TV and the producers.
"I am one of the 40 million Americans affected by adoption and this programming is offensive on so many levels — from concept, language and perpetuation of biases. The show reinforces negative adoption stereotypes while denigrating adoption as a legitimate means of family formation," says Karen Berman, National Chair, Families for Russian & Ukrainian Adoption.
As Simple as That® As Simple as That® publishes the award-winning book, Families are Forever, the first installment in an ongoing children's series confronting issues of adoption and multi-racial family life. The organization's mission is to foster self-esteem in children and teaches them to accept, respect, and celebrate all cultures, choices and abilities. As Simple as That® designs programming to appeal to all families with children between the ages of 3 and 8, and directly addresses the needs of a burgeoning broad audience: multi-racial and multi-cultural families.
